4 accidental deaths in Western New York in last few days

With only few days apart there were 3 accidents that were reported with 4 deaths. The quick timing between these events is of concern. On June 25 two men died at XPO logistics  when slabs of Corian fell on them. On Tuesday, a worker for YRC Freight died at a farm in Eden when scaffolding fell on him. A contractor for Spectrum died on Wednesday when he came in contact with a primary electric line in Yorkshire. OSHA has put in place many laws and clauses to avoid such mishaps. Law requires employers to provide a safe workplace and environment. Employers are required to identify and list out hazards at the workplace. Training needs to be given to employees along with safety equipment. Apart from the duties of the employer, a lot of employees are not aware of their rights. According to OSHA the employee can ask for test results that were conducted to their employers. They can also request for information about the hazardous metarial, chemicals, etc at the workplace. Above all if the employee feels that there is a risk involved at the workplace they can always ask OSHA to conduct an inspection.

Moulding company fined after worker injured

Magistrate Court find £150,000 to a injection moulding company after it was found guilty of breaching Section 2 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. A worker was severely injured with multiple fractures to his heel and serious burns when he was trying to clear a blockage on a plastics injection moulding machine. The company Brother Industries UK Limited was also ordered to pay a cost of £7,659.98. HSE inspector Christina Roberts said: “Those in control of work have a responsibility to devise safe methods of work and to provide the necessary information, instruction and training to their workers in the safe system of work.” “The life changing injuries sustained by the employee could have been prevented, if a suitable safe system of work had been in place prior to the incident.” Every company should carry out a risk assessment of their workplace to identify workplace hazards. Have a safety policy and follow the safe system of work to avoid injuries and accidents.
